THIS IS MEANT ONLY TO BE A GUIDE
THERE IS NO OFFICIAL GRADING SYSTEM FOR GEODES

AN AMETHYST GEODE IS PRICED MUCH LIKE A COLORED GEMSTONE. THE TONE AND SATURATION OF THE AMETHYST CRYSTAL BEING THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN DETERMINING ITS PRICE. THE CRYSTALS DISPLAYING THE DEEPEST PURPLE TONES WITH STRONG COLOR SATURATION ARE CONSIDERED SUPERIOR GEODES. THE QUALITY DECREASES AS THE AMETHYST CRYSTALS LOSE THEIR SATURATION AND BECOME LIGHTER PURPLE OR REDDISH-PURPLE HUES.

THE SECOND FACTOR USED IN GRADING, IS THE SYMMETRY OR OUTSIDE SHAPE OF THE GEODE ITSELF. THE MOST SYMMETRICAL GEODES COMMAND THE BEST PRICES.

THE THIRD FACTOR USED IS ITS WEIGHT vs. ITS DIMENSIONS. IN OTHER WORDS,THE PROPORTION OF THE GEODE CRYSTAL VIEWING AREA TO ITS WEIGHT. SINCE GEODES ARE PRICED BY WEIGHT, AFTER GRADING ITS COLOR AND SYMMETRY, A GEODE WITH VERY THICK SIDEWALLS OR AN EXTRA HEAVY BASE, WOULD BE DOWNGRADED SINCE THE EXTRA WEIGHT IS NOT ADDING ANYTHING TO ITS BEAUTY, YET THE WEIGHT IS STILL BEING SOLD TO A CONSUMER. VERY THICK WALLS AND BASE DECREASE THE AREA OR THE "WINDOW" OF THE AMETHYST CRYSTAL FIELD. -EX. A CATHEDRAL ONLY 17" TALL THAT WEIGHS 55 LBS. WOULDN'T RECEIVE A HIGH RATING.

I HANDPICK EACH GEODE ON MY BUYING TRIPS, AS IF I WERE TO BE THE OWNER OF EACH ONE. EACH CATHEDRAL PICTURED ON THIS WEBSITE HAS A GRADE OF SUPERIOR, EXCELLENT, OR VERY GOOD. THE DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH CLASSIFICATION BELOW SHOULD PROVIDE YOU WITH SOME ASSURANCE OF WHAT YOU WILL BE RECEIVING. I UNDERSTAND IT MAY BE UNEASY FOR SOME PEOPLE TO ORDER A MINERAL SPECIMAN LIKE THIS OVER THE INTERNET TRUSTING PICTURES AND DESCRIPTIONS, BUT AFTER SEEING THE QUALITY OF CATHEDRALS IN MALL STORES AND OTHER WEBSITES, AND THE PRICES THEY ARE COMMANDING, I FEEL CONFIDENT YOU WILL BE CONTENT WITH YOUR PURCHASE FROM GEOSOL.

MY PERSONAL GRADING SYSTEM USES THREE GRADES - SUPERIOR, EXCELLENT, & VERY GOOD

SUPERIOR - Cathedral is very symmetrical. Colors of amethyst crystals are well-saturated, deep purple with little inclusions. No excessive weight is on the rock to increase it price.

EXCELLENT - Stone may be symmetrical or slightly assymetrical. Amethyst crystals are less saturated than superior, but still display excellent purple tones. Stone may have more weight around its cavity or face area.

VERY GOOD - Amethyst crystals may have tints of red-purple, or light purple saturation. Inclusions may be visible in crystals. Crystals may be discolored . Stone may be symmetrical but more likely assymetrical. May have a thick shell or heavy base that adds price to the stone while taking away its display area.

BELOW VERY GOOD - I see many Amethyst Cathedrals on my buying trips AND on the internet that fall below my "Very Good" classification but I choose not to import these stones. Some of these I would describe as VERY thick sidewalls or VERY heavy weighted bases leaving little area for amethyst crystal display. It may be very difficult to see the amethyst crystals inside the geode. Be wary of very heavy weighted geodes that fit this description. These Sellers may be trying to justify their price by the weight, but it makes for a disappointing piece.
